I'm *really* hoping that they come up with a better way than month-by-month. Also this gives you just text... And no comments. Some coder types have made ones that grab format and comments, but won't log in and grab protected entries. There is just no really good way. :(

This one logs in and grabs protected entries, both the ones marked for Friends and the Private ones. Then it's searchable! I like it a lot.

I use a downloadable LJ Backup client. It doesn't save comments, but it does a nice job of downloading the entries. You can filter/search the entries for keywords and such, too. I like it a lot and like having all my entries backed up on my hard drive, too.
