Today was the big day with the hired help. Three movers from Benny's Moving Company somewhere near Waltham arrived (40 minutes later than I had anticipated, but the weather was awful - rain and sleet and gross) and had us from one house to the other in five hours. They have huge rolls of saran wrap that they wrap around furniture to keep drawers closed and such. It was a lot more efficient than our process in previous U-Haul moves. They were less than thrilled about the weight bench and a couple of other pieces, and with the weather, but still friendly and easy to work with, so no complaints here.
And, although she doesn't really count as hired help,
maratcal is now here. We caffeinated her well, and we hauled a few carloads of boxes and got a couple of the rooms more or less in order.
The plushness of the carpeting is causing technical difficulties -- all of the furniture pieces (bookshelves, etc) want to lean forward, so there will be some adjusting via shims under the front legs of some pieces, and securing others to various walls.
