On the spur of the moment on Thursday, since it was such a nice day out and we had deemed in impractical to head to NYC, I decided that we should go camping. We did our usual online research, and ended up at Catoctin Mountain National Park. Judging from the constant helicopter activity, I wouldn't be surprised if we were sharing our weekend retreat with a certain first family, who also hang out up there at that Camp David place.
We arrived on Thursday, thus beating out most of the holiday traffic, and giving us some choice in campsites (by the time we left early this morning, the grounds were full). We camped in the Owens Creek area, which had 51 campsites. I'd estimate that by today, at least 2/3 of those campsites were families with children, and at least 4 were people with barking dogs. Happily, our dogs stayed reasonably quiet for the entire 3 days/2 nights.
We hiked three short trails - one to the Cunningham Falls across the road from our park, and a couple of a nature trails. We ate tacos and pasta for dinners, and potatoes and quesadillas for breakfasts. We got a bit of sun, had generally beautiful weather, and built fires with damp wood (lots of smoke, a good amount of fire). I finished reading Hitchhiker's Guide, knitted a dishcloth, and had fabulous dreams about kissing gay boys. All that, and the weekend has barely begun!
