almost like a real city
Jan. 21st, 2006 07:36 pmThe boy had to go to school this morning and represent math geeks to parents, so I used the excuse to get out of the house and enjoy the unseasonal weather and tagged along. I enjoyed a leisurely mocha and 2 half-sudokus (I finished Friday's, and started Saturday's) and a pear danish, and then set off to wander around Cambridge. I took the train from Central Square to Harvard Square, and wandered through the stationery shop and Bowl & Board, where I wanted everything. I picked up a nutmeg grater, a butter bell (it stores butter on the counter and keeps it from going bad), two pens, and some stationery, because I can't not buy some. I spent about 30 minutes browsing through blank books, but managed to refrain. I stopped into a game store as well, but they had no inspiring puzzles.
I then walked down Mass Ave for a good mile or so, confident that I was going back toward Central Sq., but ended up at Porter. Sigh. When in NYC, I often state the direction I think we should go, then we proceed in the opposite direction, which is almost always the correct one. I should have done the same in this case, apparently. So, back on the train so that I'd make it back to Central (I wasn't about to trek another 2 miles back to boy's school, since it was windy, and I was toting my knitting, purchases, iPod, wallet, bottle of water, etc., which always ends up a little heavier than I want to tote after a couple of miles).
We made a side trip to a mall to get me a new phone, as I apparently waterlogged my old one walking through the monsoon on Wednesday. I don't think that I need a camera phone, but apparently that's one of the cheaper models that still feels weighty enough that I think it might last a couple of years. The person who helped us at the kiosk pulled lots of strings that let us keep our old numbers, and thus also our old plan, which is cheaper than all the newer plans that you can get for cell phones.
I've spent the rest of the day lazing around the house while boy is productive. I did make grilled cheeses for lunch, and I put a few things away. On the lazy side, I plyed yarn, watched Personal Velocity, and am now waiting for my bacon-wrapped dates to be crispy and ready for snacking.
