I had a good high school English experience - freshman year was English, sophomore was American, junior was Latin American/World, and senior year was pretty random (Dickinson, Plath, Poe, some Shakespeare... I'm sure there were books in there, too). You can tell that my English courses tended towards Contemporary Lit in college, once I was choosing my courses. I took Children's Lit, Lit of California, Multi-Ethnic, Modern Drama, Literature of the Americas, and a couple of others for my minor. Maybe I should get back to reading some of the classics. Any that I haven't highlighted that y'all would recommend?
