I sent my mother a thank you email for sending a surprise herby garden box (thyme, rosemary, mint and basil, from redenvelope.com). I also whined about the 60+ student appointments I have next week. Her reply:

"i feel very happy for your herby, and very sad for your 60th appt.
person. do not bite him.her. whatev. xoxo"

She is cute.

I was wide awake at 7am and decided that I should get up rather than go back to bed, since this is the earliest I've been able to get up since the time change. I did the dishes and made a German Apple Pancake for breakfast, which was very tasty, if not at all healthy (hey, at least it had apples, right?). We're spending the bulk of the day screening in our back porch. It's a walk-out, sunken porch that you access via the back door, which is on the basement level of the house. There's a wall around it about 4" high, and then you can see out into the back yard, which starts at the height of said wall. Anyway, due to the imminent cicada infestation and the constant mosquito ridiculousness, we decided to screen the thing in so that we can actually enjoy being outside for part of the summer. We're buiding the frame, bolting it into the porch wall thingie, and then stapling the screen to it. It's a lot less expensive than I thought it would be, and it means we'll be able to drag the futon outside and sleep outdoors once it's warm, which is fun once in awhile.

I also bought four stone pavers which I will set into the strip of yard between the walkway out of the front door and the driveway. We've worn down a swath of grass about a 2 feet wide, and there's no need to wear down all that grass. Plus, I'll get to hop from stone to stone, which is fun. The only round stones they had at the Depot (which we pronounce Dee-Pot, in accordance with pronouncing Target Tar-zhay) are red, and I'm not a big fan of the red, so I think I will mosaic over the tops with something to make them more colorful.

I'm also marinating London Broil to grill tonight. It's shaping up to be a nice weekend.
