winter wonderland

Yesterday was a snow day. Living in Iowa, Ohio and Chicago, we never had snow days -- snow was just one of those things, and you worked around it. Maryland, apparently, shuts down during snow. Granted there was a lot of snow - about 3 inches on the ground when I woke up, with a steady snowfall - but even today when it's not snowing and the 6 inches or so is just hanging out on the ground, almost all of the grade schools are closed.

I had a vaguely productive snow day. Advised some students via AOL IM (which was an interesting experience), finished knitting my niece a scarf, wrote the xmas letter, caught up on Buffy Season 6, took a nap, played with the dogs... decided that my postman will get convertible mittens (the ones with the flip tops, with half-fingers under the mitten part) for a holiday gift, as he works hard with all the mail I get, and when he came by yesterday he was wearing one glove with half the fingers missing.

My students today are progressively pathetic. I'm trying hard to be patient, and not yell at them too much, but they're definitely all getting lectured about coming ealier next semester, since I've been having appointments for the past month.

I think I will take a field trip to a parking lot and drive around this weekend some time, to get used to the feel of the snow. I also hope to get my hair cut and see Harry Potter, since this has been on the agenda for two weeks or so now.

Tonight is Messiah rehearsal... sigh... must not let myself sing out too much so I can still sing on Sunday.

I know, this is a boring, pointless entry. I'm just trying to stay in the habit of writing.

this is the first year that i'm giving the mailwoman a gift, but it's the first year that i've been home since i've joined nervousness.. and i know she deserves it!: )
