Snow is a big deal here in the DC metro area. The predictions range from 3" (NPR) to 8" (some random pop music station, which also claims that people are flocking to grocery stores to stock up on supplies), with most stations talking about a 5 inch snowfall. There was also a sound bite about the conference call that DC was making to the National Weather people, to solidify the game plan for the snow plows or some such.
I feel like I live in a wimpy part of the country, being this worried about that much snow.
But hey, if it means a snow day tomorrow, let them be as alarmist as they want, and let me sleep in.
I do admit that 15 degrees feels chilly, regardless of what part of the country you live in, so my ears definitely took some warming up this morning after walking from car to office. I think I may knit myself a new hat soon. My scarf is rainbowy, my gloves are black, and my hat is a red/green/blue yarn that doesn't coordinate well. I don't know if I really want a black or rainbow hat, though. Maybe a black with some heathering of bright colors, or maybe I'll just take all of my scrap yarn and knit it up into a really random hat that'll then go with anything and nothing.
I just finished a wonderful hat made out of chunky Jamieson's wool in a pretty brown/green heather called Grouse. There's a not so good picture of the yarn here: http://www.yarnbarn.com/Jameison_Unicorn/jb4b.jpg. I highly recommend it. A little itchy, but I've heard that soaking in a baking soda solution helps remove some of the itchiness. The colors are great, especially if you like heathers, and it only took about 2/3 of a skein to make a hat, leaving me some scrap to play with.
I dreamed about advising students. Today and tomorrow are the big freshman registration days, so I'm gearing up for the calls and emails.

Date: 2002-12-04 07:51 am (UTC)Unfortunately for us, UMBC has always been very conservative about closing for snow events. Even if everyone else closes, they usually stay open. We had an outright legit blizzard in January 1995, (I'm talking feet of snow), and I only recall the campus being closed one day, tops.
