The University of Iowa

The University of Iowa is seeking applicants for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor or beginning Associate Professor in mathematics education. This position will be a joint appointment in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Mathematics Department beginning August 2004. The responsibilities of the position include teaching two courses per semester, one in undergraduate mathematics and one from among the secondary mathematics teacher preparation courses and the MA and Ph.D. Mathematics education courses; advise undergraduate, MA and Ph.D. students. Candidates should hold a doctorate in mathematics education with strong preparation in mathematics or a Ph.D. in mathematics with particular experience or background in educational issues, demonstrated excellence in teaching with relevant K-12 teaching experience, commitment to scholarly inquiry and publication in the area of learning and teaching mathematics at the secondary and/or undergraduate levels, demonstrated ability or the potential to attract external funding, and ability to work collaboratively. For assistant professor, the applicant should have an articulated research agenda; for associate professor, the applicant should have an established body of research. The first review of applicants will begin January 20, 2004. That sounds like a fun profession except for the math part of it.
I always tell Chris that we are going to move to Iowa City, although I have never actually been there.

mathematics...GAH! that is one subject that has always just blown me out of the water. i had to take a semester of calculus, and even with the tutoring i made myself get, i just squeaked out of there with a C. mathematics is the stuff that my schooling nightmares consist of. not having a head for math is what led to my computer programming downfall...i just can't get my head around all of the theorums and the rules and the mixing of letters and numbers. *whimper*

Heh. Tim's whole doctorate field is focused on learning how to teach math teachers to be better math teachers. If there were more people doing that, I think that less people would hate math. Or at least more teachers would know how to help people understand how to deal with the theorems and letters and numbers when their brains didn't want to. I know a lot more about Math Ed than I need to, mostly because I get to proofread his papers for him.
