1. How does academic affairs differ from student affairs?

There are two main "sides" to a university - Student Affairs and Academic Affairs (there are also other pieces, and how everything meshes together depends on the school). Academic Affairs falls under the Provost, and includes things directly involving the classroom, such as hiring and managing faculty, academic policy-making, tenure decisions. Student Affairs falls under the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is stuff that helps develop the student in tandem with the academic stuff, such as Residence Life, counseling, student organizations, student government and leadership programming... Some functions of the institution often fall outside of these two domains (police/public safety, bookstore, athletics, financial aid), some of them I've seen fall under both sides, depending on my institution (academic advising, registrar's office). As usual, the distinctions are often blurry, for example, faculty often work with student affairs programs (like themed communities within residence halls that have faculty mentors), but that's the basic structural-organizational answer. From a philosophical framework, I would say that academic affairs' main goal is to develop students' minds, and student affairs' goal is to develop students as whole individuals (which, again, is not to say that faculty aren't trying to help students develop as people, but it isn't their primary focus).

2. Your web page has ten great places to eat in Chicago. What are the ten great places to eat in College Park or Maryland generally, and why?

I've only lived here a year, so I don't know if I've even eaten at 10 places worthy of being on a "ten greats" list, and I'll have to go with DC/Maryland-at-large, since CP has nothing that's worth noting. I guess I'd say, in no particular order:

1. The Melting Pot (because you can't go wrong with a cheese and chocolate based meal) - Rockville
2. The Ritz Carlton for brunch (because it's all you can eat and has a dessert room and I got to go for free!) - I think it's actually in VA, but it's DC-metro
3. Benjarong (really good Thai food experience - good food plus good service) - Rockville
4. Jaleo (mmm tapas) - DC
5. Gordon Biersch (for a chain, they're quite yummy, and they have amazing garlic fries with lots of real, raw garlic) - DC
6. Tiffin (consistently good Indian) - Hyattsville
7. Potbelly's Sandwich Works (sub place - I was so happy when it opened in the area)
8. Sascha's 527 (great fries, contemporary tapas, fun stuff!) - Baltimore
9. The Nile Cafe (Egyptian, great dessert) - Annapolis
10. Grapeseed (extensive wine selection, good food with great sauces) - Bethesda

3. What 5 states have you lived in, and when? Are there any you would never consider moving back to? If so, why not?

I've lived in IL (Chicago, 76-94), CA (Davis for college 94-98), OH (Oxford for grad school 98-00), IA (Grinnell for a job I really wanted, 00-02), MD (Berwyn Heights, for Tim's school, 02-present). I wouldn't rule out living in any of them, although it would be in different cities in Ohio (I could live in Columbus) and Iowa (I wouldn't mind Iowa City). Oxford and Grinnell were just a little too small and limiting - since I don't like to drive, I like somewhere that I can be in a cute neighborhood with interesting things to do and places to go.

4. How did you get your driver's license without taking a test?

Iowa is bizarre - if your birthday falls on the right date, all you need to take is the written test. I'm not sure if you have to be a certain age for this to be in effect - I was 24 when I got my license.

5. What do you think of the Grateful Dead? What about The Dead?

I think it's pretty nifty that such a sense of community grew up around the Grateful Dead, although people basing their lives around the lives of a band seems a little sad to me - there's so much of your own life to live and discover, and are you avoiding that by following a band, or are you just letting it be part of what shapes you? That was the top-of-my-head response -- my parents were huge deadheads (my dad especially), and I think they turned out fine :) I don't know a whole lot about the culture from my personal experience - just from what I knew of their following. I know even less about The Dead, although it confuses me to have to distinguish between the two now that they're both entities. I do enjoy much of the music, but the one time my parents took me a concert it poured down rain, I went home between sets, and my dad refused to take me to any more. I never considered buying a ticket on my own a priority.

If you have questions for me, ask away! If you want me to ask you questions, leave a request in the comments and I'll do that (although it may take a couple of days, since I have party planning/house cleaning to attend to)
