I woke up this morning with a charley horse

(Q) What is a "Charley Horse"?

(A) A painful muscle cramp in the leg, foot or arm is the simple answer to the question. There seems to be general agreement that the term "Charley Horse" originated when baseball pitcher Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn was unable to pitch one day because of a muscle cramp. "Old Hoss" is a member of the Baseball hall of fame. He pitched for the Providence Grays during the 1880’s. In 1884, Hoss pitched 72 games with 60 wins. He won all three games that year in what some say was the first World Series.

But, back to the medical application of the term Charley Horse. Muscle cramps for which we patients use the term should last no more than a few minutes. They may be caused by exercise or the lack of exercise such as long periods of sitting or standing in an uncomfortable position. At times, some people are awakened from sleep with a charley horse. You can ease the pain somewhat by stretching and massaging the muscle. To avoid muscle cramps, make sure you are drinking enough fluids and doing proper warm-up stretches before exercise.

it still hasn't gone away and I'm getting irritated with it. I am happily drug-free right now and would rather not take an Aleve or similar pain killer. I will walk myself to the Commons and get a beverage, and maybe the combination of walking and fluids will make it happier. Am writing a lot today...
