mix cd swap challenge thingie!

I enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] goingdriftless' CD swap, so I thought I'd start another. Anyone want to play?

Basics:
1. create a mix CD.
2. burn some number of copies less than or equal to the number of participants (assuming there are some). I will post a complete list on this livejournal periodically.
3. create a playlist (at least) - cover art, liner notes and other fanciness is optional.
4. send me your CD(s) and return postage (a book of 10 postcard stamps would be perfect, or whatever random stamps are running around in your drawer, or a couple of bucks).
5. you will receive the same number of CDs that you sent back from me.

Each CD should include songs that fit the following categories (they don't have to be in this order):

1. A song you like to wake up to.
2. A song by a band you've seen live.
3. A song in a language other than English.
4. A song about moving and/or traveling.
5. A song that reminds you of a loved one.
6. A song that you doubt that others may know, but you think they should.
7. A song that a lot of people probably know, but you like it anyway.
8. A song about/that includes references to animals.
9. A song that makes you think of summer.
10. A song you like to sing along with.
11. A song that's shorter than 3 minutes.
12. A song you like to go to sleep to.

The rest of the songs are your choice (I think that having too many categories makes it hard to create a cogent mix that flows well and such). Or, you could just include these dozen. Or, you could find six songs that meet two criteria each, and add more of your own choices. Or, you could skip those guidelines all together and just send me a mix and I'll like that, too!

Participants so far: [livejournal.com profile] sharkycharming, [livejournal.com profile] raencloud, [livejournal.com profile] outdoortoys, [livejournal.com profile] kestrel127, [livejournal.com profile] rmfleming, [livejournal.com profile] kewlness12, [livejournal.com profile] lunatopaz, [livejournal.com profile] cislocative

maybe [livejournal.com profile] maratcal.

I will send out a participant list as final as it is by June 15, to give y'all a good month to know how many CDs to produce (of course, you can start working on the mix earlier than that).

Deadline: please have CDs to me by July 15

Wanna play? Comment here and I'll send you my address! Feel free to share this with other folks you mix-swap with as well -- the more the merrier!

[identity profile] sharkycharming.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is easy to remember your address since it's also an "LJ friend."

[identity profile] raencloud.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to join, please!

[identity profile] kismet09.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] raencloud.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I had it somewhere but it doesn't hurt to have it again. Thanks for sending it!

I'm always down for this sort of thing.

song not in english. that might be tough. Being all countrified, like I am.

you could go with something with no words at all, and call it the language of musical instruments ;)

can i ask some questions before i commit?
does this mean that you send me cds from everyone playing?
i only send cds to you, in the right number?
do you have a deadline for joining this fun?

can i ask some questions before i commit? You just did :)

does this mean that you send me cds from everyone playing?
i only send cds to you, in the right number?

If you send me as many copies as there are people playing, then I send you one of everyone's. If you send me fewer, then you get fewer. This basically allows me to let last minute people in and keep other people from having to make new discs when they already thought they were done. So, if as of June 30, 8 people are playing and you make 8 CDs and send them, and then one more person joins after that, you'd get 8 CDs back even though there are 9 people playing. It all works itself out, as long as input-in is the same as input-out. And for people who send less CDs than the number of people playing, I try to match tastes as best I can. And yes, you send CDs only to me, and I collate everything and ship it back out.

do you have a deadline for joining this fun? nope! see above for safeguard. Although i'd rather you not join until late than join and drop out. that can cause headaches.

This is so my kinda thing. Can I play?

[identity profile] spherulitic.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Got your address, thanks...this will be too much fun; I have some pretty esoteric tastes sometimes....

[identity profile] maratcal.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
so i've been thinking about this since you posted it, and i'm hoping to get my act together and make a CD before i leave for my grand european tour. soooo i'm a definite maybe? or do i need to commit by tomorrow?

[identity profile] kismet09.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
no commitment necessary -- if you can get it done, fabulous -- if not, that's okay too :)

I would like some clarification of a couple of things. I'm assuming most of the people involved in this aren't of the easily offended variety, but I'd like to make sure before I pack a CD full of songs with explicit lyrics. Well, not pack full, but my sing-a-long is a Prince song (shock of shocks) that is particularly explicit but I have several to choose from if that is going to bother people. So shall I censor for the sensitive listeners or shall I shoot for the moon and hope people like the other songs on the CD? Inquiring mind wants to know.

[identity profile] outdoortoys.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, that was only one thing. My other thing was the whole "cogent mix" and more of a comment than a necessary clarification. I don't do these nearly as well as you do, so my songs are likely to bounce around, just like a day in my life might. Just forewarning.

[identity profile] kismet09.livejournal.com 2006-06-21 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
your CD can have whatever MPAA rating you want it to :) as long as it makes you happy, that's the most important criterion.
