It was grey and rainy all the way into work, which was an inauspicious way to return to the office. I am pleased with my new Chicago calendar and my Cranium-themed Franklin pages. Did you know that the houseleek was planted in the turf roofs of medieval homes, as it was thought to protect the buildings from fire and lightning? My calendar thought you might like to know. I also have the Scrabble-a-Day calendar at home. I'm sitting at my desk, as I have been for over an hour, and still really haven't done much work yet. I'm afraid of my voicemail, as I usually am, and there are so many other things to do when you've been away from your ethernet connection for two weeks.

Saturday: out to see Big Fish, learned that everyone and their mother wanted to eat dinner in Bethesda and ended up at Austin Grill, got the fabulous How to Cook Everything cookbook as a gift from friends, which was great since I had planned to buy it for myself. Tim and I then went on a field trip to the new wine bar/cafe (and just looked around - they're still very new and not incredibly organized) which is in the same strip mall as Whole Foods in Silver Spring. We picked up clementines and other snacks at Whole Foods, then swung by Blockbuster and rented Tadpole and The Italian Job. The former was delightful - definitely our kind of humor. The latter is sitting in wait, hopefully to be watched on Tuesday, since Tim leaves on Wednesday for a conference.

Sunday: spent much of the day reading Angels and Demons, which was written by the same author as The Da Vinci Code, and followed more or less the same formula, which meant I had picked out the ending about 200 pages into the 500-paged book. Even so, it was a good read, and I finished it over the weekend. This is the problem with me and books - once I start, I have a very hard time putting them down for things like sleep, eating, bathing (although sometimes I can multitask and read and bathe at the same time). If I try to start a book on a Monday, chances are I'll lock myself in my office and read all through the workday. I think that that's why I only read about 15 books over the past year. Must learn to read in moderation, or learn to live without sleep. We also took a trip to the dog park to meet up with some friends there - the weather was too nice to stay inside all day. Tim made Butternut Squash Soup and grilled cheese for dinner, both of which were quite yummy. I then spent two hours sitting on the floor making the mix CD that I mentioned yesterday. No wonder my back was less than thrilled with me.

I woke up two minutes before the alarm this morning, and had a smoothie for breakfast (OJ, raspberry yogurt, strawberries and blueberries) instead of my usual coffee. I am having serious coffee cravings, but I'm going to try to make it through the day without the crutch. I've been drinking way too much coffee recently.

[livejournal.com profile] chompyheather, when shall we have a lunch date? I have a present for you.
