If you had about $1500 to spend on a five day vacation, departing from the DC area, what would you do with it? The best, most descriptive and creative answer will win a prize. :)

I would spend some of the money on getting a hotel room.

Then, I would do all of the touristy things that locals never do - in particular, I would spend a lot of money on going to museums (how far is the Smithsonean?).

The rest of the money I would spend on two other things:

1. trying to find the best hole-in-the-wall unusal little "only the locals know about it" restaurant I could
and
2. Film. Taking lots and lots of pictures.

except I'm trying to leave the DC area :) I'm trying to maximize money/time spent on airfare/driving, and match it with a fun and funky and/or beautiful and/or pampering locale... I just can't seem to narrow it down.

Last time we had that kind of money to play with, we went to Peru for a week :)

Cruises are good because they are usually all inclusive. No worries about rental cars, food or activites. There are also age restrictive cruises, so you can avoid children for a full five days.

If you haven't done New Orleans, South West is running a airfare special $99 each way from BWI.

oooh - age restrictive. are there any of those that leave from Baltimore? all of the cruises we've seen from Balt are Carnival, 10 day, Caribbean. I guess we could suck it up and drive/fly to another port city.

Is the prize getting to go with you? : )

I'd go to Ireland or Scotland and go on a fiber excursion, shopping for fleece, yarn and petting sheep.

If that's out of the price range, I'd go to Montreal or maybe even Toronto and let my American money go farther and pretend I was a travelling dignitary or royalty and stay somewhere swanky. : )

My first thought is Barcelona, spain, whoich is gorgeous...but 5 days doesn't seem like enough time. How about Mexico or the Bahamas?

what to do on vacation

Hmmm... I would send dubya a singing telegram ... something about peace and love and just getting along... I would find the nearest state park and pitch a tent. I would enjoy the fall leaves in the new england area. Virginia is very pretty in the fall, but I bet the leaves are all gone by now. Maybe I'd drive north hitting all the state parks until I found some leaves. Perhaps I would drive up to Maine. I've never been there. It would be fun to hear the accent there and eat fresh lobster. Then I would come back via the great lakes heading over to the Chicago area and home. I'd find a lake with jetski rentals and have some fun if it weren't too cold. I'd visit Saugatuck MI and stay in some ritzy all women's retreat there. Then I would travel south and hit the Chicago area where I would visit Halsted Street and Andersonville. In Andersonville there is a nice women's book store called women and children first. There are also nice swedish bakeries there. Andersonville is lesbianville kind of like Halsted street is gay boy ville. I'd hit Girl Bar on Halsted. Then I would head out to Franklin Park and go to Temptations. Then of course I would come home to little old hickville where I live.

it might be a little late in the year, but you can't go wrong with nova scotia and cape breton in particular. it is so amazingly beautiful and full of amazing music.

and it's damn cheap once you get there.

i can't exactly say why, but i've been thinking vermont lately. it's beautiful and out of the really touristy areas, plus it would be fun to stay in different little towns and try out B&B's. of course, this is all assuming that you're going very soon. Although there's nothing wrong with some real fall weather.

Hee! girlbar on Halsted is three blocks from my (parents') house :) That sounds like a lovely trip. I've only driven into, not around in, Maine (to say that I'd been). Maybe Maine would be nice. Maybe early Spring...

Canada is looking better and better.

If nothing else, the prize will be a few postcards, and maybe something from the local-to-the-vacation yarn store :)

You could...but the two travel days are mostly dead days. If u really wnat to do it...do it. Barcelona is truly gorgeous. You cant work two more days into it?

The $1500 should be fine this time of year (off season) including hotels...but you need to look it up.

we're probably going to go in the spring, and it'll all depend on how spring break works and how much i can take off of work :)

Spring (especially early spring) is off season there. I got a round trip flight at the beginning of may for $450 four years ago or so. Try and tack a couple more days on to the trip so you aren't rushed.
