living the good life, part 2

On Saturday, we helped Tim's friend, Will, move to NYC. Will's girlfriend, Kristen, also drove her car down, and her dad decided that rather than the four of us stay in a little studio apartment, he'd book us a room in the Embassy Suites, .

With the moving and eating dinner, we didn't get to Embassy Suites until 11:30 or so at night. Turns out, they had overbooked the hotel, and so they sent us over to the NY Ritz Carlton, and they paid for our room and valet.

Had I known we were staying at the Ritz, I may have skipped dinner to check in earlier and enjoy the experience.

The doorperson/valet was on a headset, which meant he was able to tell the front desk who we were, so that as soon as we were inside, they already had our information pulled up. The lobby was beautiful -- marble, fragrant with fresh, huge orchids, decorated with plush furniture and original artwork. The woman who checked us in was incredibly friendly, in spite of the fact that we were not dressed very nicely, exhausted from moving, and our party was led by Kristen, who is not my favorite person in the world.

We got a room on the 11th floor, so we had a nice view of the Battery Park area. The room was huge, and included TV, DVD, WebTV, and my favorite, a Bose Wave Radio. I'd never had the chance to really listen to such a thing outside of the store, and the sound is incredible for such a little radio. There was a desk and a plushy armchair, and all of the lamps had dimmers. The beds were amazing. Featherbeds, down pillows, Frette linens. Definitely one of the softest beds, but still firm enough that I woke up not at all achey, even after all of the moving. Plus, bathrobes and slippers, and a great showerhead in the marble shower.

In the morning, we worked out in the top-floor gym, complete with individual tv monitors and headphones on all the cardio machines, and free bottled water. Then, we headed down to the lobby for free coffee, and an employee tracked down a New York Times for us.

So yeah, that was definitely the highlight of my 18-hour NYC experience this weekend. Great repayment for hauling a mattress from Maryland to NY.
